The SENSIMED Triggerfish® continuous ocular monitoring system is a CE marked and FDA approved device that provides insights into ocular volume changes throughout the day and night. The device includes a smart contact lens that captures spontaneous changes in the eye providing physicians with valuable information that can help guide glaucoma treatment. The device is non-invasive and allows patients to assume their normal activities.
Project Challenge and Solutions
Our customer designed and developed the device consisting of a soft, non-invasive contact lens which encapsulates a telemetric gauge sensor. The external system consists of an adhesive antenna worn on the patient’s face and linked to a portable recording device. Besides the innovation and complexity of the product, our customer set a tight project schedule that involved intense development collaboration between our teams.
Valtronic adapted the customer’s process for industrialization in a dedicated environment controlled clean room. The project also benefited from Valtronic’s experience in the assembly of an ASIC and a MEMS on a flexible substrate. A very complex high precision process was then used to over mold these parts with silicone to shape the device.
- Dedicated Flip Chip machines
- Dedicated clean room for silicon molding
- Die : 2.2 mm x 2.0 mm
- Die thickness: 50 µm
The Valtronic team provided continuous support, pro-active collaboration, and strict project management which allowed the development and implementation of a very reliable process. Valtronic continues producing the Sensor as well as the external Antenna as main components of the device to feed the needs of Sensimed AG.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive damage of the optic nerve. It is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. If left untreated, most types of glaucoma progress towards gradually worsening visual damage and may lead to blindness. To manage the glaucoma, it is vital to measure the eye pressure throughout the day. This is why continuous monitoring provided with the SENSIMED Triggerfish® is essential to get information on nighttime changing IOP, as well as information regarding the rest of the day when the patient is not at the doctor’s practice.
